McDermid, Springborn take trip to Victory Lane

Jun 17, 2008

Antigo, Wi (June 13, 2008)
110 cars checked in as Mother Nature was kind enough this week to let the rains subside by Friday morning and allow for six full divisions to compete on the half-mile at Langlade County Speedway.

The IMCA Stock Cars led the way for feature racing action and this contest was a nail bitter to the end. Jamie VanOoyen and Adam VanHaren led the 16 car field in this 15 lap contest. Defending track champion, Dan Michonski wasted no time from his 3rd row starting spot to make it to the top at the conclusion of lap 1, as Larry Karcz Jr., Rod Snellenberger, Barry Van Straten, John Heinz and Chas Van Ooyen Jr., were the hard chargers setting their sights on Michsonski. At the half-way point, Michonski maintained his lead, and as this one would go green-checkered it was Michonski crossing the finish line first.

The Wissota Street stocks took to the track next as Jan Mytas and Eugene Shawano Jr., were on row 1 for the 15 lap event. Brothers Lee and Carl Christjohn wasted no time making their way towards the front, as Shawano Jr., battled hard to maintain first. By lap 3 it was L. Christjohn taking over the top spot and former track champion, Gary Casperek trying to work his way towards the leaders. With no cautions throughout it appeared as though L. Christjohn would go on to take the victory but a last lap pass and some persistance from his brother Carl, gave fans an exciting last lap finish as Carl Christjohn made an exciting pass coming out of turn 3, and took the double checkers for the second week in a row.

Casey Cox and Adam Jennejohn led the pack of 11 UTRA Trucks for their 12 lap contest. Travis Widder would jump out to the early lead and hold his spot for several laps, but last years champion JP Remington set his sights on getting his first feature win of the season. Current point leader, Scott VanProoyen had to exit the contest early with engine problems as Forrest Crandall, Whitter, Robin Procknow all battled it out trying to catch Remington who took over the lead on lap 5. After 12 laps were in the books it was JP Remington capturing his first feature win of the 2008 season.

The IMCA Modifieds were scheduled next as Julie McDermid and Nick Holtger started the 24 car field for what was suppose to be 15 laps. McDermid held the lead as Charlie Wild, John Peters and Mike Wedelstadt all made their way to the top, but cautions plagued lap 4 and as time ran out and the blue light appeared signally the next caution would end this contest prematurly, the pack just couldn't make it work. A lap 5 caution ended the race, 10 laps short. McDermid went on to claim the win.

Todd Flannery had the pole for the 20 lap Wissota Feature and Tim Buhler would join him to lead the 13 car contest. Buhler jumped out to the lead in this one as Ron Berna, Tom Naeyert and Troy Springborn all worked their way towards the leader. No cautions would deter this feature and as Buhler was aiming towards a victory it was Springborn taking over just after the half-way point. When the double checkers dropped it was all over for Springborn as he went on to claim victory for the first time this season.

The IMCA Sport Mods were the remaining division of the night, and fans were treated to an exciting conclusion. Keith Raab and Marcus Yarie would lead the 22 car field in this 12 lap showdown and it was Yarie jumping out to the early lead. Matt Oreskovich, Tim Jorgenson and first-timer Troy Jerovetz were the hard chargers to the pack as Jamie Diestler, Eric Arneson and Johnny Whitmann battled door to door right behind the pack leaders. Again, no cautions in this contest as that saw three lead changes as Jerovetz took over the lead by lap 5. Jerovetz would hang on for 3 laps, until Jorgenson made the pass and went on to claim his second victory in a row! Jerovetz was later awarded a $50.00 cash prize courtesy of Beire's Bar located in Antigo for leading the feature at the half-way point.

Racing action continues next week as we gear up once again for all six divisions and a childs' bike giveaway at intermission. Fans don't forget to mark June 27 on your calanders as we once again honor our friend, Doug Kincaid. Several prizes will be given away at intermission, double payout for the drivers and a 13 person 'bike' contest that fans won't want to miss.
