Troy Springborn in the No. 81 Wissota Late Model

Oct 24, 2008

On the surface, Troy Springborn might appear to be just your average race car driver. As is the case with many things in life, appearances can be deceiving.

Troy Springborn is a class act for Forest County Potawatomi Racing, and has been for many years. When asked what his favorite memory over his whole career was he said, “Just going with my friends and sponsors and just meeting new people.” For someone who has been racing about 23 years now, that is a pretty down to earth response.

Springborn has been extremely successful on the track the past few years. The Shawano, Wisconsin native has landed track championships at Seymour Speedway (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002), Oshkosh Speedway (2001), Shawano Speedway (2001, 2003, 2004, 2008), Langlade County Speedway (2008) and was the Wissota State Champion in 2001.

When you hear of most athletes having that kind of success in their respective sport, usually you hear of the ego and attitude that goes along with it. For Springborn, nothing could be farther from the truth.

When asked to what he attributed his success the father of one said, “It’s the crew, it’s hard work, the sponsors’ commitment, everybody that’s helped us through the years. Basically it’s a team effort. The driver always gets the credit but I like to say it’s a team effort.”

Not exactly Chad Johnson or Randy Moss, is he?

Considering how Springborn got into racing, it seems only natural he has a humble background. The driver of the No. 81 car started racing when he was 16-years-old. He had to build his own car and has progressively worked his way up to where he is today.

He’s become so good at what he does, he doesn’t even get “pre-game jitters” anymore. In fact, rather than thinking about himself, this selfless member of the FCP Racing team said each time he gets behind the wheel, he actually thinks about pretty much everybody else. “(I think about) how we’re going to do. Hopefully we do good. Just that everybody’s alright when it’s all over with. Things like that,” Springborn said.

As if he were getting bored with all the championships he was winning in the Wissota tracks in Wisconsin, the past two years Springborn has started racing in a FastTrack series in the Southern United States. As expected, he has been doing quite well.

This down to earth racer has proved he handles himself quite well not just with his character on the track, but also with the way he conducts himself off of it. What more could be asked of anyone, whether they’re a racer or not.
